STUDENT ONLINE PERSONAL PROTECTION ACT DISCLOSURE

We want parents and students to know that World Book ("operator" or "we") is committed to handling Illinois student's personal information in compliance with Illinois's Student Online Personal Protection Act ("SOPPA"). To that end, World Book is providing this Disclosure to describe our collection, use, and disclosure of Covered Information when students use World Book Online ("site" "service," or "application").

This Disclosure supplements World Book's Privacy Policy. Please review that policy for additional, important information about our collection, use and disclosure of personal information when you use our Site and services.

Definitions

"Covered Information" means personally identifiable information or material, as well as information that is linked to personally identifiable information or material, in any media or format that is not publicly available and is any of the following:

Created by or provided to an operator by a student or the student's parent in the course of the student's or parent's use of the operator's site, service, or application for K through 12 school purposes.
Created by or provided to an operator by an employee or agent of a school or school district for K through 12 school purposes.
Gathered by an operator through the operation of its site, service, or application for K through 12 school purposes and personally identifies a student, including, but not limited to, information in the student's education record or electronic mail, first and last name, home address, telephone number, electronic mail address, or other information that allows physical or online contact, discipline records, test results, special education data, juvenile dependency records, grades, evaluations, criminal records, medical records, health records, a social security number, biometric information, disabilities, socioeconomic information, food purchases, political affiliations, religious information, text messages, documents, student identifiers, search activity, photos, voice recordings, or geolocation information.

Covered Information Collected From a Student or Student's Parent

We collect the following types of Covered Information directly from a student or a student's parent: name (not required to be a full name), email address, username, password, security question and answer that a user can use to reset a password should it be forgotten and photos.

Covered Information Collected From a School or School District

To provide our services to schools and school districts, we receive the following types of Covered Information from them: administrator name, electronic mail address, and telephone number; financial information, including bank account number or debit card number; commercial information, including products and services purchased, product registration data, product related preference data, and purchase, service, and installation information, including associated dates.

Covered Information Collected From Site Operations and Services Provided

How We Use the Covered Information

We use the Covered Information collected through the above sources to provide our services to you;

to provide access to our My World Book account;
to provide customer service;
to respond to questions, comments, or feedback;
to facilitate services through partnerships with the schools and school districts, and
to improve our Site and services

We may also use the Covered Information for the following purposes where the Covered Information is not associated with an identified student:

To improve educational products or services;
To demonstrate the effectiveness of our products or services, including in our marketing;
Share Covered Information for the development and improvement of educational sites, services, and applications;
Use recommendation engines to recommend to a student either:

Additional content related to an education, or other learning purpose within an online site, service, or application if the recommendation is not determined in whole or in part by payment or other consideration from a third-party;
Additional services related to an education, or other learning purpose within an online site, service, or application if the recommendation is not determined in whole or in part by payment or other consideration from a third-party; or

To respond to a student's request for information or for feedback without the information or response being determined in whole or in part by payment or other consideration from a third-party.

Disclosure of Covered Information

We do not sell or rent student information, including Covered Information.

Permitted Uses and Disclosures

We may disclose Covered Information in the following limited circumstances:

In furtherance of the K through 12 school purposes of the site, service or application if the recipient of the Covered Information discloses that it (a) does not further disclose the information, unless done to allow or improve operability and functionality of the operator's site, service or application.
To ensure legal and regulatory compliance or take precautions against liability.
To respond to judicial process.
To protect the safety or integrity of users of the site or others or the security of the site, service or application.
For a school, educational, or employment purpose requested by the student or the student's parent, provided that the information is not used or further disclosed for any other purpose.
To a third party that has contractually agreed to comply with our requirements that prohibit the third-party from, among other things, using the Covered Information for any purpose other than to provide agreed-upon services to the operator or on the operator's behalf and which prohibit the third-party from disclosing any of our Covered Information with subsequent third-parties. Third-parties are required to implement and maintain security procedures and practices that comply with all applicable laws and regulations including SOPPA.

Company may also use or disclose Covered Information in the following circumstances:

If federal or state law requires us to disclose the information;
For legitimate research purposes as required by federal or state law subject to the restrictions under the applicable state and federal law, or as allowed by the state or federal law and under the direction of a school, school district, or the State Board of Education if the Covered Information is not used for advertising or to amass a profile on a student for purposes other than for K through 12 school purposes; or
To a state or local educational agency, including schools and school districts, for K through 12 school purposes, as permitted by state or federal law.
